Contact Your Prescriber
OPAT services begin with a clinical decision made by your treating provider. Intravenous therapy delivered through OPAT requires an active order from a licensed prescriber who determines that outpatient delivery is appropriate for your condition. OPAT coordinates care after a prescription is issued. Treatment decisions remain with your clinician.
When to Contact Your Prescriber
You should speak with your prescriber if:
Intravenous therapy has been recommended as part of your treatment plan
You are being discharged from a hospital and require continued IV therapy
Your clinician is considering outpatient management of an infection or other condition requiring IV treatment
You have questions about whether outpatient IV therapy is appropriate for your situation
Your prescriber will evaluate your clinical needs and determine the appropriate course of care.
What Your Prescriber Provides
If outpatient intravenous therapy is indicated, your prescriber will issue an order that includes:
Medication type and dosing
Duration of therapy
Required monitoring and laboratory work
Parameters for follow-up and escalation
This information allows OPAT to coordinate nursing services and medication delivery safely and consistently.
How OPAT Works With Your Prescriber
OPAT operates in coordination with the prescribing clinician throughout the course of therapy. This includes:
Confirmation of the treatment order
Ongoing communication during the treatment episode
Documentation of nursing visits and therapy administration
Notification of changes in clinical status when required
OPAT does not modify treatment plans without prescriber direction.
If You Do Not Have a Prescriber
OPAT does not provide initial medical evaluation or diagnosis. If you believe IV therapy may be required and you are not currently under the care of a prescribing clinician, you should contact your primary care provider, specialist, or referring facility for evaluation. Please keep in mind some important information:
- OPAT services require a prescription from a licensed clinician
- OPAT does not replace your ongoing medical care
- Emergency concerns should be directed to emergency services or your treating provider
