Choose Your Medication

OPAT provides outpatient intravenous therapy based on a prescription from your treating clinician. Medication selection is determined by clinical indication, treatment goals, and safety considerations. OPAT does not initiate therapy decisions. Care is delivered according to the ordered plan.

Medication Review and Readiness

Once a prescription is received, OPAT reviews the order to confirm:

  • Appropriateness for outpatient administration

  • Compatibility with the care setting

  • Required nursing competencies and equipment

  • Monitoring and escalation parameters

This review supports safe delivery and aligns therapy with outpatient clinical standards.

Common OPAT Therapies

OPAT supports a range of intravenous therapies when clinically appropriate, including but not limited to:

  • Intravenous antibiotics for acute and chronic infections

  • Supportive IV therapy ordered as part of post-acute or stabilization plans

  • Protocol-driven infusion therapies requiring nursing oversight

Medication availability may vary based on clinical indication, pharmacy coordination, and regulatory requirements.

Pharmacy Coordination

OPAT coordinates with pharmacy partners to:

  • Prepare medications according to prescription

  • Ensure appropriate storage, handling, and delivery

  • Align medication timing with nursing visits

  • Support continuity across the treatment course

Medication handling follows applicable safety and regulatory standards.

Ongoing Oversight

During therapy, OPAT nurses monitor patient response, document administration, and follow ordered monitoring plans. Any changes in clinical status are communicated to the prescribing clinician, and escalation pathways guide next steps when required.

Medication therapy continues until completion criteria defined by the prescriber are met or care is transitioned. Please take note of this important information:

  • OPAT does not substitute for medical decision-making by your clinician
  • All medications require an active prescription
  • Therapy is delivered within defined outpatient eligibility criteria
  • Escalation to higher levels of care occurs when clinically indicated
